Now a tea room, complete with an "O" gauge layout of the station in its heyday, which would have prompted me to hang around a bit longer and investigate if only I'd known at the time. The houses in the background have been built since Chris Allen visited in 2012 and took Image

Crediton Station
Built for the London & South Western Railway in 1847 but not opened until 1851. The station building is now tea rooms and thought to be the oldest station building in the south-west to be still in use.

The main range of the station buildings, on the north side of the tracks, was opened in 1851, and may have been designed by Brunel. "Flemish bond red brick with painted Bathstone dressings" http://www.imagesofengland.org.uk/Details/Default.aspx?id=387104&mode=adv .

Crediton railway station
Actually shot across the grid line from the footbridge, which I didn't realise at the time. Not that it matters. This shows Crediton Station, which as a result of being managed under a community rail scheme as "the Tarka Line", is painted in cheerful London & South Western Railway (LSWR) colours. The station was designed by one Isambard Kingdom Brunel, who is more usually associated with the Great Western Railway. Crediton is actually a junction station, with the line to Bude diverging from the Barnstaple line here. This is not immediately obvious, as the two lines run parallel as far as Colebrook Junction.
