Knightshayes Court
A large Grade I-listed Victorian house, now in the ownership of the National Trust, it was built for the Heathcoat-Amory family, and owes its existence to the manufacture of lace. John Heathcoat, born to a Derbyshire farming family in 1783, designed and patented a machine that revolutionised the production of lace. His factory in Loughborough was destroyed by former Luddites in 1816, and he moved his business to Tiverton, Devon. By the late 19thC the laceworks there were the largest in the world. The family bought the estate in 1867, and the house was commissioned by John's grandson, Sir John Heathcoat-Amory; it was completed in 1874. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knightshayes_Court The house is open to the public and there are extensive gardens, grounds and woodland walks.
