Burlescombe: Great Southdown Farm
At least four generations of the Were family lived here from the early 17th century to the mid 18th century; sergemakers and farmers. In the fourth generation Robert Were inherited ‘Sowden’ as it was then known but lived at Harpford Bridge, Langford Budville. He insured his fulling mill there in the 1730s – see the mill at Image This was a Quaker family, related by marriage to the Fox family – also Quakers – who ran the 19th century woollen mill at Tonedale, Wellington – see Image Looking north
