A very similar view to Image The pub is right beside the railway, and Brunel's Fossend Bridge across it. An interesting piece of wartime evacuation history involving the pub is at http://www.bbc.co.uk/ww2peopleswar/stories/78/a2301878.shtml .

Up 'Cornishman' at Burlescombe, with 'Warship' Diesel
View westward, towards Exeter, Plymouth and Penzance; ex-GWR West of England main line. B-B type 4 'Warship' Diesel-hydraulic No. D818 'Glory' is heading the 'Cornishman' express from Penzance, going to Sheffield rather than to Wolverhampton as it had until recently. Behind the second coach can be seen the trackbed of the former tramway to Westerleigh.

Burlescombe railway station (site), Devon
Opened in 1864 by the Bristol & Exeter Railway, later part of the Great Western Railway, this station closed in 1964. View north east towards Wellington and Bristol. No trace apparently remains. It's hard to believe this is taken from the same spot as Image, some 54 years earlier.

Burlescombe
View NE, towards Taunton etc.; ex-Great Western London/Bristol etc. - Taunton - Exeter - Plymouth - Penzance main line. This station was closed 5/10/64, to allow freer running for fast trains. Note the wide spacing between the platforms, a legacy of Brunel's Broad Gauge.
