Housed in a romanesque former Wesleyan School, dated 1862, about which I have so far found no information; there was a Wesleyan school in the Mint, a little way across town. Walkways provides help in accessing learning and work for people with mental health issues.

School's out
A former Wesleyan school is now a small business premises. The street was originally known as Idle or Idol Lane, but was renamed King Street in 1834, in honour of William IV. The area was home to the wool trade among others, but was falling into decline by then. It suffered from a cholera outbreak and a severe fire, starting from a baker's shop, in the nineteenth century. After the old ruins were cleared the school was established to serve the local children of the poor.

Taken opposite Image The steep hill was the main route from the medieval bridge over the Exe into the city centre. Cherry and Pevsner comment "photographer's delight (provided the camera is angled to omit the surroundings)".
