Autumn pollards, Epping Forest
Although they have not been pollarded for a long time, their form can still be made out. Pollarding was the practice in wood pastures, to protect regrowth from browsing beasts. Otherwise coppicing would be preferred, being easier.

The red warning sign is there for a purpose. A herd of about 50 long-horn cattle still graze in the forest, the right of grazing livestock being granted to commoners.
