Ermine Street south of Lord Street
A shot taken in the first week of June, looking north toward Lord Street.
Ermine Street originated as a Roman road, but served for many centuries as a drove road - for livestock being herded south to London. For a few miles in this part of Hertfordshire it runs through hornbeam woods. http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/3424660

Ermine Street crosses Lord Street
On Ermine Street looking north across Lord Street to the car park at Goose Green. Fortunately the barrier stops cars going along Ermine Street, unfortunately it doesn't stop reckless people on motorbikes, who race along the path and are a hazard to walkers and horse riders.

Bridleway by Ermine Street, north of Lord Street
View north toward Hertford Heath - and eventually Lincoln and York. At this point the bridleway runs close to and parallel with Ermine Street, but the ancient alignment is less distinct here than it is south of Lord Street http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/3427466 http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/4018273 lying overgrown in the woodland just to the east of the right of way.

Hogweed, at the roadside
Umbels of hogweed, growing along the little lane known as Lord Street. I'm pretty sure this is Common Hogweed, Heracleum sphondylium - but would be happy to have my identification confirmed or corrected.

Fording place in Highfield Wood
At this point Ermine Street fords a small, winding stream. View north, towards Lord Street.
Highfield Wood forms part of the Broxbourne Woods National Nature Reserve.

Minor ford across Ermine Street
Unlike the more significant ford a few hundred metres further south Image, this one in the woods near Goose Green is not marked on the map. There was very little water in it at the end of a dry spring, anyway.
