Looking west along West Calder Main Street
Nobody is ever going to exclaim over West Calder's picturesque beauty, but it's a serviceable village with an interesting roof line. The boarded-up shop front just beyond the silver car used to be a newsagent's, and is now a private house.

Roman Catholic Church, West End, West Calder
Built in the 1870s and still in regular use, this is one of three churches in West Calder (not including the old ruined one), and the only Roman Catholic one.
Is situated on the corner of Young Street, so named because West Calder's first gasworks used to be on it, using oil from the shale mining pioneer James 'Paraffin' Young's company.
The Our Lady bit of the name refers to Mary, and St Bridget (correctly Brigid, apparently) is one of Ireland's three patron saints along with Patrick and Columba. The best story I could find about her actually refers to another of Ireland's many saints, St Ninnidh, who, according to improbable legend had his right hand encased in metal after administering her last rites, in order to keep her goodness with him for the rest of his days!

Central plaza, West Calder
View across the central plaza from beside the town clock, looking towards Scotmid. Somewhere behind the shops is a householder who keeps free-ranging peacocks who can sometimes be seen stalking across the plaza, or even going into Scotmid and nicking bread rolls.
