A Strange Skeleton near Balgreen
If it wasn't for the clumps of wool nearby I might have thought this was once a baby dinosaur! The pertinent question is why has this sheep only got two legs?! Does the farmer's dog have a thing for sheep forelegs, or do they for some unknown reason fetch a big price on the black market? As is often the case, I will just file this under 'mysteries of the countryside' and hope to be educated in due course!

Shooting Seat at Balgreen Farm
The seat isn't immediately obvious, but the ladder to it can be seen clearly, leaning against one of the trees lining the right of the field.
Scottish toponymy - the study of place names in Scotland - is a bewildering subject. 'Bal', it is agreed, derives from the Gaelic 'baile', which means farm, or a settlement, which in the past always formed around farms. However the 'green' in the name could just mean green, or be an anglicisation of the Gaelic word 'greine' which means sunny.

Old milestone
This shows the position of the Calder District Trust milestone near Skivo behind the safety barrier on the top of the banking down to Murieston Water. It is leaning backwards but it is hoped that eventually it will be reset on the opposite side of the road.
