Union Canal cutting, Millgate
This short retaining wall was built to prevent landslip in the canal cutting at Millgate Wood in Winchburgh. See Image for a general view of the canal cutting which shows the location of this buttress.

Union Canal at Millgate
The Union Canal cutting at Millgate Wood is close to the centre of Winchburgh village. The canal opened in 1822 and was built along the 240 ft. contour without locks which necessitated the construction of a tunnel, cuttings and aqueducts along the route between Edinburgh and Falkirk. The Edinburgh & Glasgow Railway chose to tunnel under Winchburgh village when the line was built 20 years later.
