Union Canal at Millgate
The Union Canal cutting at Millgate Wood is close to the centre of Winchburgh village. The canal opened in 1822 and was built along the 240 ft. contour without locks which necessitated the construction of a tunnel, cuttings and aqueducts along the route between Edinburgh and Falkirk. The Edinburgh & Glasgow Railway chose to tunnel under Winchburgh village when the line was built 20 years later.

Winchburgh
Former oil mining town, still dominated by the piles of red shale produced by the industry. Aimed mainly at producing lamp oil in the 19th Century, oil bearing shales were mined and hydrocarbons distilled off. More conventional oil production soon undercut the industry, but shale was mined until 1962.
