Byburn
Byburn is a curve of mid-20th century housing. Wellpark is a cul-de sac to the right. The planners evidently failed to consider parking, because the roadways are narrow and cluttered with parked cars. I had some difficulty finding somewhere to abandon the car to go and see the kirk.

Sundial, Ecclesmachan Kirk
A sundial set into the wall of Ecclesmachan Kirk, with the motto "Carpe Diem"* just visible on its fading stone face. This image was taken at 14:00, so the time indicated by the sundial is reasonably accurate.
* "Carpe Diem" from Horace, "Carpe diem quam minimum credula postero" ("Seize the day, putting as little trust as possible in the next").

Ecclesmachan Parish Kirk
The Kirk of St Machan traces its history back to the 12th century, though it has been extensively rebuilt over the years. The two arched doorways on the south elevation, one now built up, date from about 1200, and are echoed by the round-headed later windows. A gable of the former manse can be seen to the right of the kirk.

Ecclesmachan kirkyard
The cemetery contains more graves than meet the eye. A memorial plaque placed on the north wall of the graveyard by West Lothian Council commemorates the patients of nearby Bangour Village Hospital whose bodies were never claimed and who were buried here in unmarked graves.
