Former Engineering Works
This decaying building on Granton Park avenue is possibly the UK's earliest car factory. It was built in 1898 for the Madelvic Motor Carriage Company, who made electric cars. Madelvic folded and the site was taken over by the Kingsburgh Motor Company, and then by Stirlings Motor Carriages Ltd. Sadly, no examples appear to have survived of these companies' output. In later years the buildings housed a wire-manufacturing company. They have lain empty since 2001, caught in redevelopment limbo.

Industrial ruins in an area once full of factories, railways and of course, the gas works. The road is the site of the Caledonian Railway's Granton branch. Edinburgh's ports had two extensive networks supplying them independently, originally the Caledonian and North British railways.

National Museums Collection Centre, Granton - steam engine from a gasworks
Horizontal single cylinder engine by J Garvie of Aberdeen and drive a sliding vane gas exhauster by G Waller of Stroud. It was used at Aberdeen Gasworks and donated by Scottish Gas. Like many of the engines in this store, it has been re-erected on a purpose built concrete foundation. This not only keeps the parts together but gives the researcher a better impression of how the engine would have looked at work.

National Museums Collection Centre, Granton - steam engine
This is an inverted vertical single cylinder engine driving a pair of gas exhausters. The ensemble was by George Waller of Stroud and used at Aberdeen Gasworks. It looks a bit rough has it had been stored in the open at the previous store at Newbattle Abbey.
