Putting up flags for the fair
The highlight of the town’s year is the annual Children’s Fair where the streets and houses are decorated. Primary school children parade with bands and colourful floats. This is a celebration of the town’s mining heritage.

The Ordnance Survey slips up by marking the school as an "academy". In Scotland that is just the name of the 12-18 high school. It has no political nor management implications which is the case in England.
