One of Scotland's famous schools, including amongst its alumni, James Young Simpson, who discovered the anaesthetic properties of chloroform and dispelled the terrors of childbirth. Now converted into flats. Compare with Image

Former Bathgate Academy
A magnificent sandstone Greek revival school (now flats) built in 1831 and A-listed
(LB22125: http://portal.historicenvironment.scot/designation/LB22125 ). It was paid for by John Newland, who made his fortune from the slave trade in Jamaica.

Old Bathgate Academy
The building, completed in 1833, was the result of a bequest by John Newland, a Jamaican plantation owner who bequeathed £14,500 in 1799 to establish an academy in Bathgate.

Bathgate Academy.
The school left the site in 1967, and the striking building has slowly decayed since. Now it is the centrepiece of new housing development.
