Just in case you missed it
Elizabeth Burns, daughter of Robert Burns, married John Bishop in Polkemmet. I am told that this unusual iron memorial replaced the conventional stone which originally marked the grave. This is the back of the memorial, which is probably the most conspicuous thing I've ever seen in a kirkyard. The front Image] is much more restrained. Bess, formally Elizabeth,born on 22 May 1785, was Burns' first child, his illegitimate daughter by his father's servant lass Elizabeth Paton. Her father called her 'dear bought Bess', possibly in reference to the trouble her arrival caused him and her mother with the kirk and the unco guid of the parish.
