Three Pigeon Huts near Stoneyburn
Apparently, despite being on the ground, these huts are commonly called 'pigeon lofts'. They sit just off a good hard path to the North of the village and I presumed they were abandoned. However, I was a little startled to come across two pigeons looking quite content in their little compartments in the rightmost hut, the last of the three I had a nose in.
I have no idea what the purpose of the little boxes jutting out from the front walls are, though they seem quite commonplace if eBay is anything to go by. There were empty plastic trays in some of them so it might be where the food goes.
Pigeons are, according to all the websites, quite happy inside their lofts. New pigeon-owners are advised to keep their new pets cooped up for the first few weeks, so that they develop an attachment to their new home (all three of these had a little corridor with enough room to flutter about a bit). After this they must be let out for at least half an hour twice a day before feeding (this is presumably to ensure they keep coming back!)
Update, 11/10/22: I have been informed that the jutty-out boxes are in fact landing platforms for the pigeons. The window on the left of the hut/loft straight ahead is in place so somebody can keep an eye on returning birds and open the 'tops' of the platforms to let the birds get back inside, by way of an internal pulley system that opens the hatches.
