Once a railway station
The line from Edinburgh to Peebles ended here but ceased to operate in the 1960s. Likewise, the line from Glasgow arrived, nearby, at the far bank of the Tweed but also succumbed to financial pressures as the Scottish textile trade declined. (Scotland now has the only newly restored railway in the UK with the 'Borders Line' from Edinburgh to Galashiels: who knows if more dismantled track might return to service in the cause of reduced emissions?)
