The Old Kirk of Edinburgh
I was rather taken aback by the name of this kirk, but the kirk's own web site explains the origin of the name. It says, "The history of the Old Kirk of Edinburgh is one of movement and journeys. The congregation can trace its origins back to St. Giles, the High Kirk of Edinburgh, where, before the Reformation, there were many chapels and services. The older and darker part of St. Giles, the Nave, was known as the Old Kirk. The congregation moved from there: first to Calton Hill; then back to the Preston Aisle in St. Giles; on to Blackfriars Street; yet again, to a 'slum parish' in the Cowgate; in more recent times to Crewe Toll, and then on to our present site in West Pilton in 1951. We can argue that our first minister was John Knox, the father of Scottish Presbyterianism, and we have had an unbroken tradition of worship and service since then."
