Cottages at Walkerburn (2)
Cottages in Caberston Road; Walkerburn was founded in the mid-19th century around the Ballantyne textile mill. It was a planned village with cottage housing designed by architect Frederick Thomas Pilkington with characteristic decoration in the stonework. Ballantyne Memorial Institute, Walkerburn
The Henry Ballantyne Memorial Institute was built in 1904 (although the date 1903 appears above the main window) by David Ballantyne in memory of his father. Henry was a textile weaver who built the water-powered mill in 1846 along with a new village designed by the architect Frederick Thomas Pilkington. The Institute, built in red Dumfriesshire sandstone, was to ‘provide education and entertainment for the mill workers and their families’. It remained in trust to the Ballantyne family until it was donated to the village in 2000. (From the information board displayed outside the Institute).
