'The Wee Man' is the original statue from the village War Memorial of 1921. Smaller than life-size, it was stolen in 1998. A new statue was provided for the War Memorial, but the Wee Man was found in 2000 and replaced here in 2001. The bell is from the original Walkerburn mill, and was used to summon men to work and to signal lunch breaks.

A casual drive along the A72 past the garden seen here would have one thinking that a war memorial was also being passed, but not so. The bronze statue of a soldier with 'reversed arms' was indeed part of the Walkerburn memorial until 1998 but on 9th. August that year it was stolen! A new statue, similar but taller was commissioned and put in place. However in February 2000 this original statue was 'found' and after renovation was placed at this site. The bell has nothing to do with the war memorial; it came from the Walkerburn Mill where it was used to signal times. All of this information and more is on the bronze plate to the right of 'The Wee Man'.

The figure of the soldier stood at the original War Memorial, unveiled in 1920. It was stolen in August 1998 but replaced by a full size statue the following year. In 2000 the smaller stolen figure was recovered and placed here. The Mill Bell dates from 1885; it summoned the workforce to the textile mill established in the 1850s by Henry Ballantyne.
