St Mary's Parish Church, Haddington
This view is towards the east window of St Mary's, but all is not what it seems. The church was half destroyed in the 16th century siege of Haddington, with the tower, transepts and choir left roofless. Following that repairs were made to the west end and the roofless part sealed off with a barrier wall in 1561. Although some restoration work was done in the 19th century, it was not until the early 1970s, some 400 years after the original damage, that the restoration of the ceiling of the tower, transepts and choir was carried out using fibreglass - a lightweight and durable material that could be supported by the old pillars. So, despite appearances, the ceiling visible in this image is not old and is made of fibreglass.
