East Lothian Architecture : The Curse of Le Corbusier Strikes North Berwick
Walking eastwards along Forth Street, soothed by the familiar forms of the C19th townscape, one is suddenly confronted by this. From this angle the building looks utterly alien - like a ghastly homage to the ugliest architecture of the C20th. However, when seen from across the street, an alternative stylistic derivation is suggested.

East Lothian Architecture : Fowler Court, Forth Street, North Berwick
An unusual combination of architectural elements. This building has what appear to be 2 overlarge and overbulky turnpike stairs attached to the street facade - a wilfully perverse reversal of the traditional Scottish custom of having a narrow turnpike stair at the back of a building (unless of course what we are looking at here is the rear of the building).

Contractor's Mark in Concrete : North Berwick Bay, East Lothian
Several narrow lanes run from Forth Street down to the sands of North Berwick Bay. Each of the lanes ends with a flight of steps leading down onto the beach. Here the contractor has left a neat and attractive badge for posterity.
