Building site, Torphichen Street/Dewar Place
This site has lain undeveloped since the previous tenements were demolished presumably because of the difficulties of building over the Haymarket railway tunnels, one of which runs under the site. However work has now started on a new hotel development.

Hotel Under Construction
This site was previously occupied by Tenements which were demolished due to structural defects. The site lay empty for a long time due to the difficulties of developing it due to the railway tunnels running below the northern part of the site which is the undeveloped part of the site in the foreground.

Wartime doorway, Morrison Street
The date of this council-built block strikes me as unusual, because the construction industry can't have been functioning at normal capacity during the war years, especially the crucial year of the Blitz. I assume the availability of manpower and materials would have been a problem, but this building, at least, was completed - possibly during the lull before the storm, known as the 'Phoney War', between Sept. 1939 and May 1940.
