The Colonies terrace, Stockbridge, Edinburgh
In the 1980s, property values began to rise in Edinburgh as places like Stockbridge - one of the inner city "villages" - became highly desirable residential areas for an increasingly wealthy sector of city dwellers. It has everything : nearness to the heart of the city; small but beautiful stone houses; a water feature (The Water of Leith flowing by); the Royal Botanic Gardens up the road.

Path to the Colonies, Stockbridge
A nicely engineered sloping path leading down to the Colonies, a series of parallel streets built between 1861 and 1911 by the Edinburgh Co-operative Building Company as low-cost housing ('affordable' in today's jargon).

Reid Terrace, Stockbridge
By the Water of Leith
The group of stone terraced houses known as The Colonies of Stockbridge was the first of several ‘colonies’ to be built in Edinburgh during the second half of the nineteenth century. All but one of these colonies were built by the same company – The Edinburgh Co-operative Building Company.
Reid Terrace was the first of the terraces to be built by the Company, and named in honour of Hugh Gilzean Reid http://www.stockbridgecolonies.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=82&Itemid=150
