The woodshed at Winton
The woodland of the Winton Estate is well managed, provides good timber, and a spin-off is the Winton Walks network of paths around the estate. The trees are thinned and pruned to improve timber quality, and the paths and bridges are built to last. Wildlife is encouraged as much as possible, and positive measures are taken to create and conserve habitats. The wood is processed for furniture at the top end, and woodchips become biofuel. About 300t of woodchips a year are used to provide space heating and hot water for Winton House and 5 cottages.

Historic Winton House
Winton House was built in the early 17th century to replace an earlier castle which had been destroyed during one of the many English incursions in south-east Scotland. The House was built by the eminent Seton family, Lords Seton and Earls of Winton. The Setons were staunch supporters of the romantic but tragic Stuarts for centuries. Alas, after the 1715 Jacobite Rebellion, the Setons lost land and title, though they later regained the earldom of Eglinton. Stately Winton, from the Scottish Renaissance period, is regarded as one of the most important houses in the country. It is now the home of the illustrious Ogilvie family, Sir Francis, Baronet, and his family are the present residents and custodians of this piece of Scottish history. Winton is now a world class corporate and conference centre. Winton is situated off the B6355 road between Tranent and Pencaitland.
