As seen from the west on Preston Road. Built in the late 16th century by the Hamiltons of Preston. It was sold to brother-in-law of James Hamilton, Joseph Marjoribanks, in 1607; the edifice we see today owes much to the building work of Marjoribanks. The house contains some wonderful tempera painted walls and ceilings. The house is the oldest inhabited house in Prestonpans.

A well-preserved 17th Century L-plan house in a large walled garden. Originally constructed 1580-90, it was bought in 1607 by Joseph Marjoribanks, an Edinburgh Burgess. During the 17th Century it was owned by the Hamiltons of Preston. At the end of the last Century it was owned by East Lothian Council, but was sold in 1999 and returned to private ownership. NB Moderator: GPS and OS 1:25000 have this definitely in NT3873, not in NT3974 which has other images.

The house was built in the 1590s by the eminent local family of Hamilton. It was later sold to a brother-in-law, Joseph Marjoribanks who remodelled the house in 1611 including moving the entrance from front to back. Northfield passed through many families, including the Symes and McNeils before coming to the architect Schomberg Scott. When he died, the house passed to his son and, contrary to other reports, the house was never in the hands nor care of the local council. The house, after years of neglect was sold to city lawyer, Finlay Lockie.
