Memorial Gates
The twin ogee-roofed gate pillars are a war memorial, built in 1934 to a design by John A McWilliam. The inscription reads, "To the glorious memory of those Royal Scots who faithful unto death gave their lives for king and country in the Great War 1914-1918".

Midlothian Architecture : The Old and The New at Glencorse Barracks, Penicuik
This fine ornamental gateway appears to be all that's left of the old stone-built Glencorse Barracks. Note the fine railings with the thistle motif.

Playground Sheds, Glencorse Primary School, Penicuik, Midlothian
Seeing these playground sheds reminded me of my primary school days in urban Lanarkshire. Our sheds straddled the boundary between the boys playground and the girls playground. [The playgrounds were strictly segregated in those days so the boys could run around fighting without disturbing the girls who would be skipping with very long ropes and elastics]. The two separate sheds were, in effect, built back to back with first floor accommodation above and built of dark, grim, sandstone with iron columns and steel beams. They provided a welcome shelter from the perpetual winter rain and sleet and were primarily used for British Bulldogs and similar games that always consisted of running about wildly and knocking people over. Of course this was back in the olden days before they had invented electricity and mobile phones........
