Thomas Chalmers statue, George Street
One of the leaders of the 1843 Disruption which led to the creation of the Free Church of Scotland, of which he was the first Moderator. Looking for all the world like a seller of the Big Issue, in his day the big issue was whether wealthy patrons had the right to install a minister in a parish against the wishes of the presbytery. Chalmers was one of 450 ministers who put their ecclesiastical careers on the line by refusing to compromise on the principle of the Kirk's independence and right to conduct its own affairs. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Chalmers http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disruption_of_1843 The statue is the work of Sir John Steell (1878).
