Former tramway, Newtongrange
A grassy path between bushes and trees runs along this old embankment south of the village. It carried a former tramway that linked to the Lady Victoria Colliery and Newbattle Brick Works, shown on the OS 6" Edinburghshire sheet VIII.SE (1915).

Lady Victoria Colliery
Conveyor bridge crossing the A7. This area was all formerly part of the colliery site but has now been developed for housing. This was the original bus terminal for the colliery, and an old shelter remains; regular bus services pass along the main road.

Overhead gantry, Lady Victoria Colliery

Solar panels, Newtongrange
A kind of irony in the former coalminers' cottages now being fitted with solar panels. The cottages are in Lingerwood Road and are seen from the embankment for a former tramway that linked to the Lady Victoria Colliery and Newbattle Brick Works, shown on the OS 6" Edinburghshire sheet VIII.SE (1915).

Scottish Mining Museum, Newtongrange
The former Lady Victoria Colliery has been transformed into a fine museum, preserving and explaining the history of coal mining here and more widely in Scotland. Coal mined here went to power stations or to the steam-powered textile mills in the Borders.
The concrete gantry connected the main buildings with the pit baths across the road, now demolished with houses built on the site. Before the baths were built the miners took a bath at home. If a working father had sons also in the mine, he took precedence for the clean bathwater!
