24 - 26 St Andrew Square
Three of the block of four houses, the first to be built on the north side of the square. The architect of No 26 is known to have been William Chambers, so it is likely that all four were by him. The houses were built in 1770-1772 for 'the joint purses of Sir Robert Murray, Sir John Whitefoord and Gilbert Meason'. Meason's house was No 26, which retains a rubble facing, while Nos 24 and 25 were re-faced in ashlar. In 1840 a porch was added to the door of No 26, conventionally placed in the centre bay of the front elevation, plus pediments and wallhead balustrade. The taxi rank in front of Nos 24 and 25, not to mention the outposts of the tram works in front of No 26, make it difficult to photograph them well.

24 St Andrew Square
No 24 was one of the block of four in the centre of the north side of St Andrew Square, built in 1770-1772, probably by William Chambers, for the 'joint purses' of Sir Robert Murray, Sir John Whitefoord and Gilbert Meason. The apparent asymmetry of placing the door in the second bay from left was balanced by placing the door of No 23 next door in the fourth bay from left. The Roman Doric porch was added as late as 1970 by Dick Peddie and McKay.
