Park with a View

St Hilda's
In 'The Buildings of Scotland' St Hilda's is described as having a 'mad mansard, spindly slated candle-snuffers coming straight down on chunky corner corbels'. It was built about 1850, and originally named Kirkbrae House. The mansard is thought to have been added later. From 1901 it was a girls' boarding school, and the name St Hilda's was bestowed on the building by the headmistress. At the commencement of the Second World Warthe school moved out to Ballinkrain Castle, near Stirling. St Hilda's was used by the army during the war, and the school never returned, owing to difficulties with post-war renovation. The building was converted into flats in the late 1940s.
