Bike Garages, Portobello High Street
These secure bike storage units are currently in the process of getting rolled out across Edinburgh. They each accommodate six bikes, and cost the cyclist, according to the press releases, £72 per year. They are obviously a great idea as they have an occupancy rate of over 90%, there are waiting lists in various areas, and in areas where there aren't enough of them cyclists are petitioning the council for more. They are getting paid for by the city council and Sustrans, a charity that oversees all of Edinburgh's cycle routes as well as the National Cycle Network, in a 50/50 split. Looking at the figures, the scheme should pretty much pay for itself in the long run, so long as the 'Bikehangars', as they are officially called, don't get too rusty too soon.
