Birthplace of James Nasmyth, York Place
The middle door and window belong to the house in which James Nasmyth, inventor of the steam hammer, was born. His was one of the inventions that made Lowland Scotland, especially the West, one of the cradles of the Industrial Revolution. York Place looking east
At the town terminus of the Edinburgh tram 'network' - a single line from here to the Airport. It was originally planned to go down to Leith, and have a branch to Granton, but contractual and management problems meant the full project was curtailed.

End of the line, for now
Traffic cones across the tramline which now continues down Leith Walk. Not long before the line finally opens. The temporary (for nearly 10 years) stop at York Place has now been removed.

The Conan Doyle, York Place
A pub which stands opposite the birthplace of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, demolished along with a whole block of New Town houses in 1970 to make way for a large traffic roundabout!
