Bowfoot Well, Grassmarket
The well stands at what was the foot of the old West Bow (originally pronounced as rhyming with 'cow') before early 19th century improvements created Victoria Street seen behind it. The sculpted City of Edinburgh coat-of-arms is a Victorian addition from the time of the well's renovation in 1879.

North side of the Grassmarket
"The markets in Edinburgh are not in the open street, except that in the High Street, where there is every morning a herb and fruit market, which yet abates before noon, and what remains then is no grievance. Besides this, there are several distinct market places walled in, and reserved for the particular things they are appointed for, and very well regulated by the magistrates, and well supplied also; as
1. The Meal-market
2. The Flesh-market
3. The Poultry-market
4. The Butter-market
5. The Grass-market
6. The Horse-market
The last two are kept open, and in the same street just within the west port, with several others. There is also, in the street called the Lawnmarket [Linen-market], a weekly market for all sorts of woollen manufactures, and some mercery and drapery goods, and also for linen cloth." -- Daniel Defoe, A Tour Thro' The Whole Island Of Great Britain (c.1716)

Al fresco Festival dining
In Edinburgh's Grassmarket. For five hundred years (until the early 20th century) this was more a place to feed horses and cattle, for auction; also a place of public executions.
