A little history uncovered
The removal of paint has revealed an earlier use of our local joiner's shop on Braid Road. It reads '.... FOR ADAMS PATENT STEEL CORE SHAFT GOLF CLUB BALL & FISHING ROD MANUFACTURERS 5 BALCARRES STREET'. The missing top line on the left, still covered, possibly would refer in some way to Buchanan & Company, who were golf club makers at 5 Balcarres Street, and this was their shop, 350m away. A notice in the Edinburgh Gazette, 22 March 1895 [p.518] records the sequestration of the business, and that it had 'postponed a dividend and dispensed with circulars to creditors'.
