Golf Tavern, Bruntsfield Links
A public house that claims to have been established in 1456, although the earliest recorded mention of a tavern on the Links is in 1717. The interior has been modernised several times, leaving no trace of the past. Bruntsfield is claimed to be the earliest place where golf was played in the Edinburgh area (mentions of golf at Leith Sands being even earlier).
"He [David Garrick] told us to bring golf clubs and balls that we might play the game at Molesey Hurst. We accordingly set out in good time, six of us in a landau. As we passed through Kensington, the Coldstream Regiment were changing guard, and on seeing our clubs they gave us three cheers in honour of a diversion peculiar to Scotland." -- 'Jupiter' Carlyle, accompanied by John Home in 1758

Golf Tavern sign, Bruntsfield Links
Pub sign based on a painting of the 'Great Triumvirate': (l. to r.) J. H. Taylor, James Braid and Harry Vardon. When I passed the Golf a few months later, I was taken aback to see that this historically evocative painting had been replaced with a modern black-and-white, logo-style golfer taking a swing.
