The churchwardens' pews at St Margaret Pattens
The church of St Margaret Pattens was built by Christopher Wren between 1684 and 1689 and the steeple dates from1689 – 1701. The spire is 199 feet high. The west gallery carries the organ and in front of this are the canopied churchwardens’ pews – the finest in the City. One of these has a date on it of 1686. The church was restored in 1955 – 1956 when the gallery in the north aisle was filled in. As well as the churchwardens’ pews, much other original woodwork survives including the beadle’s pew at the front.
