"Blue plaque" on Great Sutton Street, EC1
One of an increasing number of "blue plaques", modelled on those for famous individuals, that tell the story of ordinary citizens, this draws on the 1911 Census to record that in that year this site was occupied by Mary Ann Ruffell, waste paper buyer and wholesale paper dealer, together with her lodger Caroline Harper, a publisher's sorter.

The Garden of Remembrance of the Priory of St John's
This quiet and almost unknown garden is the other side of Clerkenwell Road from the Gatehouse and Museum of St John. The garden is planted with medicinal herbs including many used in patient care in the Order of St John's medieval hospitals. The Order's historical caring role and medical heritage are the foundations of its current charitable work through St John Ambulance and the St John Eye Hospital in Jerusalem.
Today, the garden is intended as a space to remember all St John's members, including many who lost their lives in times of conflict. The garden was first established between 1955 and 1958 when the Church was restored after being hit by an incendiary bomb in May 1941. Only the original crypt of the church remains.
