The Red Lion Inn at Bobbington, Staffordshire
This image shows the modern hotel accommodation. The old pub is the large white building attached.
This is a smart family owned public house and hotel in Six Ashes Road. The building was first recorded in 1820 as an ale house brewing its own ale, cider and porter. The main pub is shown here. Extensive adjoining property to the left of it contains the hotel accommodation, and a huge car park is to the rear. An impressive and extensive menu is augmented by a wide selection of wine availability, and some decent real ales (Theakston's - including Old Peculier on draught, also used for flavouring their own steak pies - and local brews from Enville and the Wye Valley Brewery in Herefordshire)*.
Not cheap, but check out the quality! You get what you pay for.
*Lager is also available, on request ;-)

The Red Lion Inn (3) - sign, Six Ashes Road, Bobbington
A very modern sign but it would perhaps be nice to see a picture of a lion.
The Red Lion remains the most common name given to public houses, inns & taverns. The name derives from King James VI of Scotland, who inherited the English throne in 1603, on the death of Queen Elizabeth I. He became King James I of England, and to reinforce his authority to rule, he decreed that all public buildings (including taverns) must display a heraldic red lion in a prominent position. This resulted in many pubs acquiring the Red Lion name. Probably this particular Red Lion pub wasn't around in the 17th century, but the tradition of giving this name to pubs etc, seems to have carried on for a long time. According to The Inn Sign Society's website, there are thought to be about 600 Red Lion pubs still in business, and over the years many more of the same name have closed.
