The Bell (1), 614 High Street, Kingswinford, near Dudley
A local pub with dining, which was extended in the 1980's. It replaced an earlier pub of the same name which was demolished. That was a Mitchells & Butlers house, in the days when they were a brewery rather than a pub and restaurant chain. The original pub fronted straight onto the road. When the replacement was built it was positioned further back from the road. The road at the side gives access to the pub's car park. Image

The Bell (2) - sign, 614 High Street, Kingswinford, near Dudley
The sign is at the front of the pub, which replaced an earlier one of the same name. See:- Image The Bell is a popular name for public houses and inns. The name reflects the close association that the church had with inns and taverns in the past and particularly in medieval times. Many religious establishments brewed church ales which were sold to increase income. The sound of the church bell was heard far and wide, particularly in the days before the noise of motor traffic etc. Frequently there would be a pub located very near to the church. Quite often the pub name includes a number such as The Five Bells, to reflect the number of bells present in the church.

The building shown here looks very different from the present one, but maybe it represents an earlier building, or it is just an example of artistic license. Image
