Severnside Business Park, Cheapside, STOURPORT-ON-SEVERN, DY13 9HT

Most of the buildings which can be seen here, used to be part of the Holbrooks Vinegar Brewery. It was originally built in 1798 but, following a major fire in 1882, most of it was rebuilt. The vinegar manufacture ceased long ago, but the premises, or part of them, are still in commercial use. Many other industrial buildings around this part of the town, including the former power station, have been demolished.

The building on the left is part of the former gas works. That on the right is part of the old vinegar brewery, which ceased to produce vinegar in 1998. See also:- Image

Holbrooks Vinegar Works was built at the junction of the Rivers Stour and Severn by Charles Swann and Hickin Bold in 1798. Sarsons vinegar products were made here from 1954 until around 2000. Part of the site has found new uses, but much of the main works still lie derelict and remain inviting to urban explorers.

Holbrooks Vinegar Brewery which is long since closed and looking a little unloved in this corner. This once was home to a steam powered air compressor that supplied the air (oxygen) to the acetifiers for the ethanol to ethanoic (acetic) acid conversion. This was apparently removed (rather than scrapped) but its subsequent fate is not known to me.

This was and to a limited degree still is part of the industrial area of Stourport-on-Severn. Much has gone, but parts of the buildings remaining are in some kind of commercial use. On the left are remains of the old gas works.

At the time this photograph was taken Unit O was occupied by Aztec Label. The firm manufactures self-adhesive label and tag products. The business was established in 1993 and as it has grown it has moved premises several times. The premises at Severnside Business Park were only temporary, as the firm was planning to move elsewhere.

The building in the foreground is Severn View, and comprises 25 apartments. It is part of the large Waters Edge housing development being built around a canal basin, which has been dug out of a larger filled in basin. The basin is the other side of this building. Waters Edge and the basin are part of the regeneration of this part of Stourport-on-Severn. Originally there was talk of cafés and the like around the basin, as well as housing. But all that has been built, so far, is housing. As all the building is now either completed, or well under way, it is difficultv to see where a cafe or any other non-housing unit could be fitted in. That being so, those in need of refreshment will have to content themselves with the nearby Angel Inn, and the recently opened Windlass Café & Restaurant at 1 Severn Side. Image Image

This lane connects the road known as Cheapside with the footpath running alongside the River Severn. The buildings on the left used to be a vinegar brewery. Those on the right were part of the former gas works.
