Sherborne Steam and Water Wheel Centre
This building is the original Sherborne water works of 1869 with its large breast shot water wheel that drove reciprocating pumps. The wheel is 26' diameter and had to be totally rebuilt in 2007/8. The original axle, bearings and ring gear were reused. The wheel is seen to the left of the sign. The steam part of the title was added in 2012 when a steam engine was commissioned on the site in a new purpose built building.

Sherborne Steam and Water Wheel Centre
Oddly the breast shot waterwheel had a number of possible water sources at different heights. It was used to pump water from a borehole to various points around the town. The wheel was later augmented with a steam pump.

Sherborne Steam and Waterwheel Centre - pump
A two-throw pump by Sparrow of Martock and driven by the waterwheel next door. Smaller than the original pump it does give an impression of what the waterwheel once did - pumped drinking water to Sherborne.
