Housing Grove Road Portland
This house at Portland not far from the Youth Offenders' Institute on Grove Road was originally probably built for the staff. The houses need to be sturdy in this windswept location and nearly all are built from the renowned Portland stone from which so many buildings are constructed in London.

This terrace of houses was formerly prison officer’s homes. They are now in private hands. They would have been built around the same time as the prison - 1848.

The churchyard at St Peter's, Grove, Portland
This is high up on the plateau of Portland, with the open sea barely a mile away to the west, and the trees have learnt to lean with the prevailing wind. (The sea is even nearer going east, but that's not where the worst of the winds come from).
