HM Prison Portland Adult & Young Offender Institute (YOI)
Originally opened in 1848 as an adult convict establishment, it became a Borstal in 1921, and a YOI for adult males aged 18-21 in 1988. In April 2011 the prison became an Adult/Young Offender establishment.

HM Borstal, Portland, 1962
Now categorised as a Young Offenders Institution. This is the East Cell Block of 1898, Listed Grade II. At the time, Portland was the Borstal equivalent of Dartmoor Prison, where the most serious offenders were detained.

Young Offender Institution
Formerly known as the Convict Prison. Below can be seen the route of an old railway. This once climbed from near sea level at the north end of the island along the east coast before circling up into the centre near Easton.
