Elkesley Pumping Station, steam engine
One of two inverted vertical triple expansion pumping engines built in 1911 by Ashton, Frost & Co Ltd of Blackburn. These were large Corliss valve engines developing 450 horsepower at 22-25 rpm. They were retired in 1973 when one suffered a catastrophic mechanical failure, allegedly shortly after a party of school children had visited. The intact one was removed to the Welsh Industrial & Maritime Museum in 1978 but was later scrapped - a terrible waste.
