Railway Station, Retford
Class 58046 on a 'Merry-Go-Round' train, is passing through the lowel-level station, heading for one of the coal-fired power stations. The upper-level has all the amenities and is on the East Coast Main Line. This section of track and the northern section of the ECML were opened in 1849. The southern section, to Peterborough, had to wait until 1852. A total of 50 Class 58s were built by BREL at Doncaster between 1983 and 1987 and from new all were painted in grey Railfreight Sector livery, instead of the BR blue. They served for 20 years, but some which have been sent abroad, are still working. I first photographed them at Peterborough. They were working on test, in pairs, on the 'fly-ash' trains.
