Retirement homes: Jubilee Cottages in Brumby Wood Lane
Belonging to the Appleby-Frodingham Cottage Trust, Jubilee Cottages were built as homes for very long-serving steelworkers who had retired from Appleby-Frodingham. Three years earlier, employees across the plant had been given the chance to subscribe a halfpenny a week. 40 per cent did so and more than £1,000 was raised for the retirement project. United Steel – Appleby-Frodingham's parent company – met half the cost of the work and agreed to loan the remainder. Eight further Jubilee Cottages were started in 1957, to add to the existing 20. The contract for the second batch went to Scunthorpe firm HN Slingsby. A number of "useful suggestions" were put forward by works councillors after careful examination of the plans. The cottages took their name from to the Silver Jubilee of King George V, celebrated in 1935.
