The Row
The short terrace of buildings to the left of the unmade road in Horsehouse is apparently named The Row. The image was made from the small forecourt of The Thwaite Arms, where lady's mantle grows to cover a low stone wall.

Thwaite Arms, Horsehouse
A pleasant sunny day and a place for a welcome lunchtime pint, but disappointment on this occasion as the pub was closed. Horsehouse is an odd name and one theory is that it was once a resting place for pack horses on routes from Wensleydale into Wharfedale and Nidderdale.

Approaching Horsehouse
Following the dale road into Horsehouse on a 'driech' morning. However, half an hour later there was bright sunshine over the dale. A few streaks of snow on the flanks of Little Whernside ahead.

Plaque, former school at Horsehouse
'A Stanza of Verse Inscribed in Commemoration of the benefactions of Horsehouse School Composed by RALPH RIDER of Deer Close, being blind and in the 90th Year of his Age.'
'The Stranger here may see as he goes by
An Act of most extensive Charity
Which Providence has brought upon the Stage.
Such deeds are rare in this degenerate Age
Where sensual Pleasures Avarice and Pride
Predominate and Virtue laid aside.
Here's Treasure laid for Ages to endure
From Rust and Moth and Pilfering Thieves secure.
Which, like seed sown upon a fertile Soil
in time will recompense the Plowmans Toil
Posterity may reap the Crop and thank
JOHN CONSTANTINE and
WILLIAM SWITHENBANK'

Village of Horsehouse, Coverdale
The church of St.Botolph and the conveniently close 'Thwaite Arms' pub dominate the scene in this quiet small village which is said to have taken its name from the pack-horses and the London to Richmond stage coaches which were rested here.

St Botolph's church Horsehouse
A fairly basic church of 1869. The description takes only 4 lines of print in Pevsner's guide to the buildings of the North Riding.
