Down train of empty flat wagons for steel plates approaching Northallerton
View southward, towards York and the South: ex-NE ECML. Northallerton was one of the busiest junctions in the whole country, where the immense industrial traffic from Tees-side southward joined the ECML from the line from Eaglescliffe. This line runs under the main ECML from Northallerton East Junction through the Low Level station, the major part going via Longlands Junction towards Thirsk and York, the rest via Cordio Junction for the Leeds Northern line via Ripon. This is a typical train of the special wagons for steel plates, returning to the great steelworks at Middlesbrough. The locomotive is ex-WD 2-8-0 No. 90434, which was built 1/44 by Vulcan at Newton-le-Willows as No. 7474 (later 77474), loaned to the SR at Bricklayers Arms, shipped to France in 12/44 and returned by 3/46. It was one of the 200 purchased by the LNER, becoming Class O7 No. 3113 (later 63113) and allocated in the NE Area: it remained in the NE Region until withdrawn in 6/67, working mainly from Newport - a Depot that had about 40 of the 'Austerities'.

Avoiding lines
These enable trains to and from Teesside to avoid passing through the station and to avoid conflicting movements at the junction. The reduction in the volume of freight traffic means that they are less used than formerly, as they cross all the main entry roads from the west of Northallerton at level crossings.
